STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Raiders capped their championship season with a 16-4 overall record and won the program’s second state title overall, and first since 2005. Moorpark never trailed in set one and two and throughout the match held Orange Coast to no more than three consecutive points. Early in set one, Moorpark jumped out to a 10-6 lead after a kill from freshman outside hitter Tyler Peterson. Orange Coast scored four of the next five points and completed an 11-8 run to eventually tie the set 18-18 after a kill by freshman opposite Troy Tomasello. But The Raiders didn’t back down and went on a 7-1 run of their own and eventually cruised to the opening set win. Set two saw Moorpark storm out to an 11-5 advantage as sophomore right side Josh Howley led the early charge with two kills and two blocks. With Moorpark leading 28-20, OCC got a kill and a pair of blocks from freshman outside hitter Luke Ammerman to get as close as 28-23. But it was too little too late as Moorpark held on for the win. The Pirates finally showed some life in set three thanks to its home crowd. Orange Coast finally took its first lead all night at 5-3, but held the advantage for the final time at 8-7. The Raiders scored five straight points, getting two kills from sophomore outside hitter Trevor Willenberg, a kill from sophomore middle blocker Kyle Auge, and took advantage of two OCC errors, to jump ahead 12-8 and take the lead for the final time. At match point, OCC’s Justin Johnson’s serve into the net gave the Raiders the set three and state title win. “It was a total team effort for us tonight,” said Moorpark head coach Steve Burkhart. “We worked on ball control all week and it was never more evident than tonight. And that’s what it really came down to for us. We were siding out all the time and we never let them get on any runs. That was huge for us.” The final stat sheet reflected the total team effort for Moorpark as four players closed the match with double-digit kills. Auge led the charge with 13 kills and four blocks. Howley and Peterson each had 12 kills, while Willenberg chipped in with 10 kills. Sophomore setter Adam Quinn was named state tournament most valuable player and led all with 41 assists. Freshman libero Erik Varney had a match-high 16 digs, while sophomore Brandon Keane added eight digs. “This is a real special group of guys,” Burkhart said. “To win a first state title was unbelievable, but to win a second time is incredible.” Orange Coast closed its season with an 18-3 overall record. Sophomore outside hitter Brad Hemmerling led the Pirates with 19 kills while Tomasello added 10 kills. Freshman libero Harrison Phelps had 14 digs and sophomore setter Paul Leon totaled 36 assists. “We just weren’t able to match Moorpark’s intensity,” Orange Coast head coach Travis Turner. “I’m not sure if it was a letdown that we weren’t playing Irvine Valley, but regardless that is no excuse. Moorpark played well. They deserve the championship.” Orange Coast made its 13th trip to the championship final but will have to wait until next year for a shot at winning state title number six.
