Semifinal #1: Moorpark 3, Irvine Valley 2: 30-22, 30-24, 28-30, 31-33, 15-13

Moorpark College pulled out a marathon 3-2 win over Irvine Valley College in the opening semifinal of the 2010 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Men's Volleyball State Championship on Thursday night at Orange Coast College’s Peterson Gymnasium in Costa Mesa.

Moorpark won the match by scores of 30-22, 30-24, 28-30, 31-33, and 15-13 to advance to Saturday's state championship final at 7 p.m. against host Orange Coast. Moorpark returns to the title game for the first time since its state championship 2005 season.

The Raiders, the No. 2 seed out of the Western State Conference, cruised to early wins in the opening sets and appeared to be on their way to a sweep of the Pacific Coast Conference champions from Irvine Valley.

But the Lasers got some momentum back after winning set three and were leading big in set four, up 25-16, before Moorpark put together a rally to bring some life back into the match.

Moorpark had match point at 30-29 after an ace by Jared Mammen but couldn’t finish off IVC. A pair of Moorpark attack errors and a pair of kills by the Lasers’ Alex Reis gave them the 33-31 win to force set five.

Set five saw eight ties and was close throughout until Moorpark pulled ahead 13-11 on an Ian Cafferty kill. Josh Howley’s kill gave Moorpark match-point at14-12 before the Laser’s responded with a kill by Caleb Brown to make it 14-13. But a service error by Brophy gave Moorpark the set and match victory.

“We knew Irvine Valley would fight hard,” said Moorpark head coach Steve Burkhart. “I think losing their libero (Nick Castello to injury) really hurt them in the end. But our kids are fighters and they wanted the chance to win the state title.”

Howley led Moorpark (15-4 overall) with 24 kills, followed by Kyle Auge's 18 kills. Adam Quinn totaled an impressive 74 assists, and Lewis Varney had 14 digs.

“Adam Quinn led the state in assists the past two seasons, so we knew we could count on him,” Burkhart said. “He’s an incredible kid and he did a great job for us tonight.”

Irvine Valley ends its season with a 16-3 overall record. Alex Reis led the Lasers with 24 kills and Caleb Brophy had 17 kills. Garret Dvoracek totaled 63 assists and Nick Castello posted 17 digs.

Moorpark will look to avenge its loss to Orange Coast from early this season. On February 12, Orange Coast beat Moorpark 3-2 (23-30, 30-23, 30-21, 25-30, 15-10).
